Origin Fire Consultants were engaged to undertake and provide a Gap Assessment (Fire Report alt.) along with design & construction advice for works at Orakei Marae undertaken by the Marae Infrastructure Programme. Works were delivered to scope, within reasonable timeframe, at a reasonable cost, and to a high level of quality. In this particular project, Origin showed great innovation. A wall was required to be 2-way fire rated, however site conditions and use would have made a traditional GBU method uneconomical. Origin suggested an innovative RyanFire product that allowed 2-way fire rating, with only one side of the wall exposed. This allowed the project to move along smoothly and quickly. Belcanto approached Joanna at Origin Fire to help create a clear compliance pathway guide for councils and other fire engineers to use on their projects.  Joanna had worked with Belcanto previously on projects involving Grappler Balconies, and her knowledge of the system and our process was most beneficial.  Joanna has a very pragmatic and clear judgment on fire practice, which was most helpful in understanding and developing the direction we needed to take for demonstrating compliance. There were gaps in the current code for balconies, and codes that were not so relevant, and Joanna being able to develop these and create valid reasoning for a testing criteria proved very effective. Joanna’s close relationship with FENZ and Auckland council enabled buy in from these authorities and getting the key decision makers involved also in the process from the start.  Following our successful fire furnace testing of the balconies, Joanna undertook further work to demonstrate post fire stability compliance. This involved analysing closely all the fire test data and applying this to the structural properties of Aluminium. This work was immense and time consuming.  Joanna’s structural engineering background helped in extrapolating the test data and creating a report which was then underwritten by a 3rd party structural engineer.   The outcome for Belcanto was great, we have since had three projects through the BC stage with no RFI’s around fire compliance on the balcony. Having a documented compliance pathway for the Grappler balcony has enabled confidence with our clients, councils and fire engineers. The Grappler Balcony is the only fully tested Balcony system in Australasia, and we are very proud of what Joanna and Origin Fire have been able to accomplish.  We fully recommend Joanna for her capability and professionalism, and we are honoured to have been able to work with her.
